2014-2015 School Year

I am so excited about this school year. We will grow our math skills in so many ways! I will use this blog to post announcements, newsletters, and math homework. I am looking forward to working with your child this year!

*I will be on maternity leave from August 11- October 3.*

Please click the following link to fill out important information about your child.

Here are some tips for getting your 5th grader ready for math:
  • Basic multiplication and division fact fluency is a must! There are so many funwebsites and apps your child can use to practice. Your child will find math more enjoyable if they are fluent with their facts. Basic facts are used in almost every math skill!
  • Encourage your child to think outside the box when solving problems. Mathematics is not a one size fits all subject. There are many ways to arrive at the same answer. Encourage your child to use what they know to solve challenging problems.
  • Begin working with your child on the standard multiplication algorithm. We learned many ways to build our conceptual knowledge about multiplication in 4thgrade. We will now transition to the standard algorithm in 5th grade. Please encourage your child to check their work using strategies based on place value, such as the open area model, or partial quotients. These strategies help your child build number sense which is crucial for math understanding.
